John YOUNG, a native of France, came to New York from France via Belgium about 1845 and moved to Watertown, WI in 1849 with his children and 2nd wife to farm (his first wife Magdalene died shortly after arriving in NY. John then remarried a Mrs. Heffner while in NY). John & Magdalene had 5 sons and 3 daughters. I think all children came to WI with John and his 2nd wife. One of the children's name was Nicholas (aka N.S.) Young (my gg grandfather) who was born 09/21/1835 in Pettelange(sp?), France. Nicholas (N.S.) left Watertown around 1854 (but periodically returned for lengthy stays) and settled in Burlington, Iowa in 1866. His occupation in Burlington was a railroad contractor. N.S. died in Burlington on 02/25/1913 and is buried there. He married a Cate (Kate?) Schlenger (Slenger?) near Milwaukee, WI on 09/17/1864. Cate/Kate was born in Mainz, Germany on May 11, 1846 and died in Chicago, IL on 09/24/1935 and is buried in Burlington, Iowa.

Nicholas & Cate had 9 children -- of whom two died in their infancy) -- Viola Eugenie (b: abt 1865 in Milwaukee, WI), George John (b: 09/06/1867 in Burlington, IA), Josephina Emma (b: abt 1870), Mary Clara (b: abt 03/1875 in Burlington), Nicholas Edward (b:1876/d: 1878 in Burlington), William Henry (b: 09/1877 in Burlington), Elizabeth May (b: 03/1880 in Burlington/d: 12/10/1884 in Burlington), Arthur Le Roy b: 06/22/1882 in Burlington) and Earl H. (my grandfather, b: 06/08/1886 in Burlington/d: 1968, buried in Burlington).

ANY information would be greatly appreciated. My daytime phone is: 515-246-3566 and my home phone is: 515-276-9652. My email address is: JYoungDSM@aol.com

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi! I got my membership to the society for X-mas from my Hubby and was wondering if you could be of service to me since I now live in Kentucky and have a hard time doing long distance research. My fourth Gr. Grandfather is Carl Gauerke (wife is Christine Nell) I don't know their birth death dates and children (all sons) I think the boys were all born in Germany. The date I have for them coming to the states is June 30 1851...? On the boat Order from Hamburg. If you could give me any information on him or Christine...I would really appreciate your help. I really am curious about my Opa (German for Grandpa). Danke Schøne in advance. Your Friend, MaryKay Gauerke Kosek

Hello,

I am interested in learning more about the ancestral heritage of my grandparents, Stanley and Ruth Schmidt. I know very little about them, but here is what I have discovered so far. Mr. Schmidt was born on May 4, 1899, and resided in Burnett, WI at the time of his death 11/1977. He was married to Ruth Schmidt (d. 11/1980). They had four children: Robert, Eugene, Bernard (my father), Patricia and Lester.

I would be pleased to have any information at all, or perhaps a tip or two about where to dig for clues.

Sincerely, Mark Schmidt Elk Grove, California

I am looking for information on Herman Frederick WEBER and his "unknown wife".

Herman was born in Germany 3-27-1830 and was a doctor. He came to the US and settled in WI for a short time. He had two children born to him and "unknown wife" in Watertown. One child was Ernest Weber born in 1864. The second child was Ida Weber born 10/31/1865.

Sometime between the birth of Ida in 1865 and 1872 this "unknown wife" died.

Herman was remarried to a Augusta Amelia Fink in Mower Co., MN on 10-7-1872.

When Herman came to the US he already had two children by the unknown wife. The first was Max Weber b.6-6-1860 in Germany and the second was Anna Weber b. 1862 in Germany.

I would like to known if any of the Webers in the Watertown area at this time might have been brothers to Herman. It seems that a lot of the family names keep reappearing, such as Augustus, Charles, Gus, Max, Herman and Frederick. Also does anyone know the "unknown wife" or anything about Herman's parents.

Hello, I am trying to find out what Catholic churches existed in Lomira in 1896-1901 and Leroy in 1904. I have 3 family marriage records showing my 3 couples to have been married by Catholic priests in these 2 towns in the years specified above. I would like to know what records the Catholic Churches in these towns held at that time and what might be available through the churches if they are still standing or else possibly through the archdiocese which oversaw theses areas. Did the Catholic churches in Dodge County with predominantly German congregants continue on with the German tradition of keeping family books? If so, does the current overseeing body release this information to family members at this time?

I also would be very interested in learning about the German population of Dodge County during the time period of 1895-1905 (also with information to do with German immigration during this time period). Any suggestions as to books written about this subject which I might purchase would greatly be appreciated.

I am researching the names HAGEN, UTTENDORFER, WEBBER, THAELER and SPANGEL. Any information on professional researchers who specialize in this area of Wisconsin would likewise also be appreciated. Thank You!
