Seeking parents of George GAUSE who was born in WI in 1849, enlisted in Co. G, 40th Reg. WI Infantry at Lake Mills on 18 May 1864. George never returned to WI after the war, and instead married and settled in Fulton Co., IL, dying there in 1884. Census info on George states his father was born in Germany, his mother in VT. I've had no success locating George or a possible family for him (he would have only been 11 years old) in the 1860 census. The 1860 Jefferson Co. census shows, in the town of Sullivan, a 2 year old Caroline Gause living in the household of Frederick Hauserman, and a 4 year old William Gaus living next door in the household of Christian Vine. Because of my deadend on George's family, I tend to speculate that it's possible these two children are George's siblings and were possibly left orphaned? Any information on this surname in Jefferson Co. would be helpful.

UECKER/SCHMIDT/BUNKE/LANGE
I am a great grandson of Johann Friedrich Carol Otto UECKER and Karoline
Heise UECKER, who came to the Watertown area from Germany in about 1866 and stayed there until moving to Wright County, Minnesota about 1874. We believe that Johann's brother Carl was also in the Watertown area. Carl's son
Otto married Johann's daughter Albertine
at St. John's Church in December, 1870.
Because the bride and groom were cousins and there was some unhappiness in their families, the groom changed his surname to Ecker and moved on to Chicago.
My grandfather, Eduard August Louis UECKER was the only Otto UECKER child born in the U.S. He was born in Watertown on April 24, 1868 and baptized at St. John's Church in Watertown.
I would be interested in any further information that is available and in sharing with others who are researching
these surnames.

My check is in the mail -- to the D/JCGS -- really it is. OK, perhaps the more cynical among you will think I am paying up just so I can get some help with this query. Partly, that's true, but my ties to Jefferson Cty are many, and I should have joined long since!

My dad's, mother's, mother's, dad, Johann Georg RAUSCH (b.1800,Thierstein,Bav) and his two daughters, "Sabine" (WALTHERS) b. 1827? and Elisabeth (RIESS) b. 1839 or 1840, emigrated to twnshp Farmington, Jeff Cty, in 1846. We also believe Johann's wife came, but died shortly after (1846-1850 period).

We are looking for a church or civil or newspaper record of her death, and ALL information given in those records.

Handed down family records in Wisconsin indicate her name may have been Elisabeth, although Bavarian records suggest her maiden name was Magdalena MEICHNER, b. about 1807.

1850 census records shows recently-married daughter Sabine (variously written Lawina and Cabena) and her husband John Walthers and one child living in Farmington Twnshp; and also a nearby entry in the same twnshp for John "ROSS", age 51, farming, and Elisabeth ROSS, age 11, both born Germany. Despite the distorted (Americanized??) spelling of RAUSCH, we believe this is Johann Georg and unmarried daughter (mother apparently having died). In 1855 State census, there is a listing in Farmington twnshp for a John G. "ROUSE" in a household of 1 male/1 female, both foriegn born -- again, we think this is Johann Georg RAUSCH and daughter Elisabeth. In 1860 census, Elisabeth is also married, but can find no listing for Johann Georg (altho we know he lived yet for many years).

So back to the question: Death info for Johann's wife, died 1846-1850?, probably Farmington township (but possibly Milwaukee area(?) if didn't settle immediately in Farmington twnshp in 1846), name Elisabeth or Magdelena (possible maiden name MEICHNER). Any search is admittedly complicated by the tremendous possible variation in the spelling of last name: RAUSCH, ROUSE, ROSS, RUSCH, RUESE, et

I have ancestors who were married in Barkwood, WI (Jefferson or Dane County).
I have found a "Bark" River SE of Fort Atkinson. Do you have any further knowledge of where this place may be located?
