Subject: Myers/Meyer Pattison Landgraf families

I am looking for information on my great great grandmother, Magdalena Graff Myers/Meyer. I believe that Magdalena was born in Grafenreuth, Bavaria and came to Jefferson County in 1844 with her three daughters:  Catherine who married John H. Landgraf in September 1844; Magdalena (Lenora) who married Alonzo Pattison and Anna Magdalena (Martha Margaret) who married John Adam Wandel and moved to Michigan in approximately 1861.

I can find nothing on Magdalena and her daughters until I find them on the 1850 Census. Lenora was living in the home of Alvina Carpenter, Catherine was married and I can find nothing on Martha Margaret or her mother Magdalena. By 1860 Lenora was married to Alonzo and had one son; Catherine was married to John and had children and Martha Margaret was listed twice: once living next door to Catherine and John Landgraf with her daughter Frances and again visiting (?) in the home of Catherine and Alonzo with her year old daughter, Clara. It is at this point Clara disappears and I was wondering if anyone can give me some information on any members of this family or where I might go to try to find information on them.

They seem to be hidden behind this very tall brick wall and I just can't seem to see over the top of it.  The only other bit of information I have been able to pick up is that Nicolas Meyer was the husband of Magdalena, but we do not know if he died in Germany or if he had preceded Magdalena to Wisconsin or if he died at sea on the trip over to the United States....then again, maybe Magdalena was widowed before she came to Wisconsin. I am hoping that someone will be able to help me find out something more about this family.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Subject: Rachel Woltmann

I am looking for information about Rachel Woltmann, born May 10, 1895 (this was listed in my aunt's birthday book).  I never heard any mention of her from the family, but she is listed in the 1910 Census as an adopted child living at the home of Louise, Magdalene and Martha Woltmann (my great-aunts), 311 Green Street, Watertown.  The census shows Rachel's birthplace as Kentucky.  Her parents' birthplaces are also Kentucky.  I would appreciate any information about her - thank you.  /  Ethel Croner     ec60014@aol.com

Subject: query for your website

Hello,

I am trying to help a good friend find the burial place of her grandfather, Godfried HOFER.  My friend is 85, lives in central WI, and is not online.  She is the kindest soul and I would very much like to help her solve this family mystery that she has carried all her life.

Godfried HOFER was born June 11, 1845 in Bern Switzerland.  He and wife Dorothea (nee ZINDEL) came to WI in about 1883 and first located near Waterloo, Jefferson, WI.  They had 4 sets of twins.  Children: Albert, Jake, Christ, Barbara, Mary, Rose, and Louisa Hofer were born in Switzerland.  Louisa was born in 1882 and died shortly after the family arrived in Waterloo in 1882-3.  She is said to be buried near Waterloo and was a year and a half in age.

Four more children were born to the Hofers: Dorothy, John A., Godfried Jr., and Ida.  Godfried and Ida were the last set of twins born in 1888 at Columbus, WI.  The Godfried Hofer family moved to Wood County, WI, by 1900 where they appear on the census.   By 1913 Godfried left the family, asking his wife for a divorce.  It is thought he is buried in the St. Paul, MN, area.  He was never heard from again after he left his wife.  Godfried was a baker in Switzerland.  It was said he left the family often before the divorce, seeking work in larger cities.  I cannot locate him on the 1910 census anywhere, nor the 1920 or 30.

Godfried Hofer had a sister, Elizabeth (Hofer) CHRISTAIN, also born in Switzerland.  She married Jacob CHRISTIAN prior to 1862.  Elizabeth Hofer Christian died in 1908 (month unknown) and I would like to obtain an obituary of her that might list her surviving brother, Godfried and his possible whereabouts at that time.  Elizabeth and husband, Jacob Christian, had at least 3 children born in Waterloo, WI: Emma, b. 1862; Mina, b. 1866; and Ida , b. 1869 and I believe Elizabeth died near Waterloo, WI.  I would also like to correspond with anyone researching the Hofer/Christian surnames to provide clues to the demise of Godfried Hofer.

Thank you for your time  //  A member of your wonderful society  // Kay Scholtz

Subject: Rev. Gottlieb Klugel's Church Records

I am trying to find the location of Gottlieb Klugel's church records.  Gottlieb was a preacher of the Lutheran Church and he was the second Lutheran preacher in the state of Wisconsin.  He moved to Chester Township, Dodge County between 1870 and 1873.  He died at his home in Waupun on 18 Oct 1891.  His church records may have been donated to a Lutheran church or they may have stayed in the family (his descendants or his wife's family) and possibly handed down from generation to generation.

 Background:

Gottlieb Klugel (umlaut above the 'u') was born in Paitzdorf, Duchy of  Saxe-Gortha-Altenburg about January 1804.  He is the son of Goerg and  Eva Rosina Klugel.  As a young man, he went to study theology in Dresden under Rev. Martin Stephan.  The Saxon Lutherans decided to emigrate in order to pursue religious freedom.  In 1838 the Saxon Lutherans set sail for America aboard five ships.  They departed from Bremen in November of 1838 and arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana between 31 Dec 1838 and 21 Jan 1839.  Sadly, one ship was lost on the voyage and all hands were lost.

The Saxon Lutherans continued up the Mississippi River to Missouri.  There they purchased land in Perry County and began to form their  communities.  Rev. Stephan was made bishop of these Lutherans but within 6 months of their arrival he was banished from the group due to moral improprieties.  The group suffered many hardships the first couple years.

Later in 1839 another group of Lutheran, sometimes called "Old  Lutherans", from Pommern, Silisia, Saxony and other areas decided to  emigrate in order to pursue their form of Lutheranism which was banned by the current king of Prussia.  This group of Lutheran arrived in New York between September and October of 1839.  They continues up the Hudson River and then along the Erie canal until they reached Buffalo, NY.  Here the majority of them began their new lives. However, a small group of about 40 families continued on to Wisconsin where the majority became farmers and formed the community that was to be known as Freistadt.  Some of these immigrants remained in Milwaukee.  These "Old Lutherans" considered themselves as one congregation.  This group did not have a pastor and for the first two years, the elders in the congregation preached the sermons and performed the services (baptisms, weddings, etc.).

Finally, in September of 1841 Pastor Krause came to Milwaukee and  tended to the congregation (both in Freistadt and Milwaukee).   However, there were difficulties from the start and some of the congregation was dissatisfied with Krause.

Sometime in 1842 or early 1843 Gottlieb Klugel came to Milwaukee.  In  a letter dated 17 August 1843, Krause complained that he was having  great difficulties with Klugel. Klugel began preaching to those dissatisfied with Krause and he soon had a congregation and a church.  His church was located in Milwaukee at Tamarack and 5th Street.  His church is mentioned in the 1857/58 and 1870 city directories.  However, it is not listed in the 1878 or 1881 city directories.

There are some records that indicate Gottlieb Klugel had a number of preaching stations in the area. There are baptism records from a church by the name of "German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mequon" where the names of Gottlieb and/or his wife appear.  This church was east of the Milwaukee River and appears to have been in existence from about 1841 until 1860.  Another source indicates Klugel may have preached at a public school in Germantown for a period of time.  There are at least 77 marriage certificates on file in Milwaukee County and there are at least 4 marriage certificates on file in Dodge County for weddings that were performed by Gottlieb Klugel.

Numerous people have looked in Milwaukee for his church records and no one has been able to find them.  It is my contention that he brought his records with him when he moved to Dodge County.

I have checked with a number of Lutheran Churches in northern Dodge County and no one was familiar with the name Gottlieb Klugel, or their earliest records dated from after Gottlieb's death.

 Klugel-Grebel Genealogy

Gottlieb Klugel (also spelled Kluegel) married Johanna Friederick Caroline Amelia Grebel on 27 Aug 1844 in Milwaukee, WI.  His wife went by the name Caroline.  They had four children that lived into adulthood.  Caroline Grebel was born about 1816, Saxony and died 26 Aug 1899, Dodge County.

 1)  Benjamin Klugel b. Feb 1850, Milwaukee - d. 1918, Waupun.  He married Mathilde Boose 05 Nov 1882 at Gottlieb Klugel's House, Chester Township, Dodge County [They were married by Gottlieb Klugel]. They had two children:  Agatha Klugel who married Frank Trowbridge and Luella Klugel who married Arthur/Archie Helgeson.  Luella did not have any children.  Agatha had three girls;  Joice married a Zoellner (children unknown) - Valma married a Quick (I spoke to a descendant of this branch and they have no knowledge of the church records) - Bernice who also married a Quick (Bernice had two girls).

 2)  Marie Magdalena Klugel b. about. 1852, Milwaukee - d. ?.  She  married Daniel Hahm or Hahn 15 Jun 1873 Chester Township, Dodge County  [They were married by Gottlieb Klugel].  She may have married a second time to a Derr (a 1926 obituary for her sister, Martha, states: "...a sister, Mrs. Derr of

Milwaukee, survives.").  No other information on this branch has been found.

 3)  Martha M. Klugel b. 29 May 1854, Milwaukee - d. 10 Aug 1926,  Beaver Dam.  She married Frank Helbing 07 Oct 1877 Chester Township,  Dodge County [They were married by Gottlieb Klugel].  They had six children, five reached adulthood.  Lydia Helbing married Professor F. Herman Frank (two children Ardis and Leonard), Prof. Frank died before 1920 and Lydia may have married William E. Schroeder - Agnes Helbing married William L. Howland (two children: Lucile E. married a Schindel and Leona I., marriage unknown) - Ida Helbing married Fred T. Grebe (one child: Wilmer, marriage unknown) - Arthur Helbing married Viola E. Borchardt (one child: Dorothy M., marriage unknown) - Ralph Helbing married Elmira ? (children unknown).

 4)  Johanna Klugel b. abt 1858, Milwaukee - d. ?.  She married Charles  Beichl 07 Nov 1882 in public church meeting, Cherster Township, Dodge  County [They were married by Gottlieb Klugel].  They had one child.  George Carl Beichl married Louise C. ? (one child:  Bruce George Beichl, marriage unknown).

Now, there is also a possibility that the records were passed down  through the Grebel branch of the family.  Gottlieb's wife, Caroline, had a brother and a sister who also moved to Dodge County.  The 1880 federal census show Gottlieb and his family living next door to Herman Grebel and his family. Herman is Caroline's sister.  The Grebel family is as follows:

 A)  Theadore Wilhelm Herman Grebel b. 18 Jul 1823, Saxony - d. 22 Nov  1892, Beaver Dam.  He married Marie Antonia Dorothea Hauf b. 21 Jan 1831, Saxony - b. 11 Dec 1910, Beaver Dam.  They were married 03 Jun 1849 in Milwaukee by Gottlieb Klugel.  They had 10 children.  August F. Grebel married Frances M. Young (had at least one child) and were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waupun - Linnie? Grebel (marriage unknown) - Martha Grebel (marriage unknown) - Edward (marriage unknown) - John Grebel married Anna Rauber (children unknown) - Charles Grebel (marriage unknown) - Johannah Grebel (marriage unknown) - Mary Grebel (marriage unknown) - Anna Grebel married Daniel Boose

(children unknown).  It appears the family lived in Chester Township, Dodge County since 1850 as one source indicates August F. was born July 1850 in Chester Township.

 B)  Mathilde Grebel b. about 1825, Saxony - d. ?.  She married Wilhelm  Boose b. about 1820, Bavaria - d. 15 Feb 1899, Waupun, Fond du Lac  County.  They were married on 21 Aug 1846 in Milwaukee by Gottlieb Klugel.  They had eight children, 6 of which lived into adulthood.  Mary Boose (marriage unknown) - Jacob Boose married ? 09 Nov 1882, Dodge County (children unknown) - Elizabeth Boose (marriage unknown) - Daniel Boose married Anna Grebel (children unknown) - Mathilde Boose married Benjamin Klugel (children listed under Klugel) - Augusta Boose (marriage unknown).

Any help in locating Rev. Gottlieb Klugel's church records is greatly appreciated.  Please contact me if you have any information.

 Tom
