Subject: Moore Family in Concord

Elizabeth T. Moore, believed born 29 Mar, 1833 Hartford, CT. married Adam Petrie, b. 15 Sep 1830 Little Falls, NY. on 2 Nov 1852 in Concord, Jefferson, WI. Justice of the Peace, Austin Kellogg, performed the marriage.

Adam and Elizabeth Petrie lived in Concord until 1874, when they moved to Unity, Marathon, WI. All 3 Petrie children - George Walter (1854), Edith (1856) and Annie (1861) were born in Concord. Adam Petrie is found in Concord on the 1850 Census and the family is in Concord on the 1860 and the 1870 Census.

I would like to find the parents and siblings of Elizabeth T. Moore Petrie. I believe Elizabeth's middle name was Theda and that her mother's first name was Theda. I have recently noticed a Theda Moore living in Concord, in the house of Austin Kellogg, in the 1860 and 1870 Census. This could be the widowed mother of Elizabeth Moore Petrie, and raises the issue of whether Austin Kellogg's wife, Laura A., could have been a Moore. I have not found Elizabeth Moore in Concord in 1850 - before her marriage. I may have missed her, or she may not have been in Concord before her marriage in 1852.

Adam and Elizabeth Petrie's son, George Walter Petrie, married Louisa Alida Moore, daughter of John James Moore (buried in Jefferson Co., WI. in 1883). Their marriage was in Concord on 11 Jul 1875, but they had moved to Minnesota before her father's death.

I don't know if Elizabeth T. Moore and Louisa Alida Moore are related.

I would appreciate any information on Elizabeth Theda Moore's parents and siblings.

Thank you,  Jim Kendall

Johann Leonhart Zellhoefer "Leonhart" 1815-1901 came first, arriving in Rome about August of 1844.  He married **Margaretha "Charlotte" BENSIN on 1 Sep 1846, who soon died.  He next married Christina PFEIFER on 13 Apr 1847; apparently she had just arrived from Germany, as they were married in Milwaukee.  They farmed there until their deaths in 1901.  There were 13 children, some buried in now-called St. Peter's cemetery in Helenville . . .

Subject: Surnames Laabs and Trester

Greetings - I am researching the surnames Laabs and Trester from Jefferson County.

I may be a bit off the mark here as I do not know if they had residency there, but reports are that they were married (sorry, do not know the city) in your county.

August Trester and Christina geb. Laabs were married on December 01, 1884.  As for religious preference, his family was Catholic, her's Lutheran.

It is believed that the Tresters were either from Waukesha or Milwaukee Counties, before that Sheboygan, before that Bohemia.  The Laabs family is supposed to be related to the Laabs Cheese Factory people in Clark County, before that, Dodge County, before that Stettin, Westpreußen.

I am not a member of the Dodge/Jefferson County List so this is kind of a long shot into making a final link in this area.

query

I am looking for the Mathis Hansen family.  They came from Norway in July, 1870.   But I do not find them in the 1870 census.  They left Wisconsin in March, 1878.

I have found conflicting information on where they lived.  It was either Jefferson Co or Whitewater.  The only town named Whitewater I can find is in Walworth Co.  Was there ever a Whitewater in Jefferson Co?  Is Whitewater on the border of the two counties?    At this point I'm not sure which county I should be researching.  Two or three of their children were born here in Wisconsin and I think one of the children died here.

Any suggestions you have would be most appreciated.  Thanks.  /  Diane Hanson

BOHN STELSE SCHMIDT SCHULTZ

Looking for the parents, siblings, death and burial information of  August F BOHN born  3/21/1852 Woltersdorf, Pommern, Germany.  He married Augusta STELSE of Schonow, Pommern, Preussen in about 1878.  In about 1883 they immigrated to the USA with her son Herman Unknown, who took the Bohn name, never married and is buried in Rock Lake Cemetery, and their son August Frederick William BOHN, Jr. who was born 1/4/1880 in Germany.  They settled first in the Aztalan area and had son Arthur August Bohn born 8/10/1883 and daughter Elizabeth Albertine Dorothea "Lizzie" Bohn born 2/6/1885.  Both children were baptized in the Lake Mills Moravian church.    They later moved to the Medina/Deerfield area.  Augusta died 8/28/1901 and is buried in Medina cemetery.  August remarried Ernestine POLENSKE (who had previously been married to Petrick and Kuehn) and moved to 3rd Street in Watertown.  August die d 10/8/1940 but I can not find his grave.  Ernestine died 4/15/1943 and  her obit states that she is  buried at Immanuel Cemetery but I can not find a listing for either of them.

Also, looking for information on the mother of Augusta Stelse, Louise (Schmidt) Stelse born 12/21/1831 Janikow, Pommern Preussen; she immigrated 10/31/1884 to the Lake Mills area; died 6/24/1893 in the home of her son-in-law August Bohn of Milford.  She was the spouse of Carl Stelse who probably died prior to 1884 in Germany.  She was the mother of 7 children, 2 sons and 5 daughters; sons were Carl (no known info) and August Friederick 1861-1905; daughters were Augusta (Stelse) Bohn, Caroline (Stelse) SCHULTZ (wife of Carl, buried in Waterloo) and 3 unknown.   I would love to find the names of the unknown daughters.   There are other Schmidts in the Lake Mills area that belonged to the Moravian church.  Would love to find information to link her back into her Schmidt family and link her husband to the other Stelse families in Lake Mills.

Hello . . . my name is Christine Giles.  I’ve been researching my family tree for some time and I fee I may have a connection with Watertown, WI.  Recently, I found information about a plague sweeping through Watertown around 1850.  My ancestor, George Washington Hall, was, according to his civil war papers, born in Watertown in about 1842.  Is there any record of those who died, any gravestones still standing or other information about specific people from this era?  I found our GWH at the age of 14 in Linn County, IA, living with an elderly couple to whom he was not related.  Information says that he had been in Iowa for about 6 years; apparently, he was an orphan.  My suspicion is that his parents and/or siblings perished in the plague in Watertown.  Perhaps he was sent away to avoid it.  Can you give me any help at all with this?

Thank you so much,  Christine

Subject: Rome / Sullivan Twp old church and cemetery records

I just received information that Rev George Zellhoefer was licensed 1857  to the ministry at the "Walter's Church"; Rev J G (probably John) Miller aided and abetted....

Along with that was other information that George's brother Leonhart Zellhoefer & wife Christine Pfeifer (d.1901) were buried in the Lutheran cemetery at Rome.  I know that some of their offspring are buried at St Peter's in Helenville.

George & Leonhart had a rift serious enough that they probably did not attend the same church, even tho both had property nearer the Riverview cemetery, at least during their initial years in Sullivan Township.  George & brother Mike remained close, however, and Mike was an Elder in their church.  George eventually moved his family to Iowa, but Mike's family is buried in Riverview East.

I have numerous other ancestors buried in Riverview, the first of those being in unmarked graves as the result of a cholera plague which took 37 lives, those being the beginning of Riverview West, and many others resting in Riverview East.  Beside Riverview East is an old frame building which looks as tho it was a 1-room school or church, I think now used as a part-time home.

So I ask if anyone knows if the Riverview cemetery was/is associated with an evangelical/lutheran church, and could tell us all something about the history of that church in/around Rome in those early days?  What was it called?  aka Walter's church?  Was such the predecessor of the church now on Main Street in Rome, or another church entirely?

My own interest is that I hope to find old church or newspapers records which might  help track the 4 children of my g.g.gf Mike, as all were given for adoption after his death in 1865, and no adoption or birth records exist elsewhere - I have searched that to exhaustion!

Thank you for any bit of help!  /  Ron Klotz-Zellhoefer

Subject: Researching Strege and Schliewe families

Hello  /  I'm afraid that my family history comes mostly from oral history, so I cannot guarantee accuracy of dates/info.  Here is what I have been told by my great-aunt, who married into this family: William Schliewe (born c. 1851 in Pomerania) and his wife Augusta (born c. 1860 in Wis.) resided in the Watertown area, where they worked a farm. Their daughter Ida Schliewe (born c. 1881) married Albert Strege (also referred to as Emil Strege - born c. 1883, appears to be deceased before 1930). I have located Albert and Ida on the 1920 census as living in Milwaukee, WI with their children Theodore, Doris, Josie, Lillie, and Ellsworth (Bud) Strege.  Lillie married Edris Baker c. 1920, and Doris married Charlie Abbaden (sp?), both boarders who emigrated from Turkey. According to the family, the Strege family once owned many businesses in Watertown such as a bowling alley, grocery store, and electric company, but I have not made any connection to Albert/Emil yet.  Albert was working as a drayman when he suffered an accident that somehow forced the family to move to Milwaukee, where they then operated a boarding house. If anyone has any info connected to this information, I would truly appreciate it!
