Subject: Grace Jones School

Along with my cousin, I've been trying to gather information and verify some known facts about my Wisconsin ancestors. My great great grandmother Annabella Brennan came to America with her parents and siblings in 1845 and settled in Watertown. She attended "Grace Jones Private School" ??? I can find no information or references to this school in any of my searches.  Do you have any information? I am also unsure of how many siblings there were. One note states she was the oldest of eight children.  Her father, Patrick Brennan was working for the railroad in Attica, Indiana in 1850 and died there in an accident in 1855 but we have no knowledge of where he was buried.  Her grandfather James Brennan settled in Clyman in 1843 and died in 1865 in Watertown  at least he is apparently buried there.  Annabella Brennan married Ernest Schwellenbach of Jefferson in 1855.  My great grandmother Nellie A. Schwellenbach was born in Jefferson in 1860 but I suspect she attended school in Watertown because in an autograph book I have of hers -circa 1878-82 some of the signers are from Watertown. I've only scanned a few at this time and so attach a sample.

If you have any information about the families of James or Patrick Brennan I would greatly appreciate your help.

sincerely Christine Preto

Please help me locate where Chauncey H. Purple is buried. We know he died in Watertwown in 1879. He was the assistant state treasurer from 1858 for about 8 years. An Obit exists for him (on order) and he had his bio written up in two books. I cannot find him listed in the death index for WI, but he did die there. Would this cert. be kept at the local level, and not in the state archives? He died 17 Dec 1879.

His daughter, Clarrisa Purple, was born in 1853 in Waukesha. She also is not in the index. Maybe the birth cert would be at the local level?

I am looking for information on the Michael Smith family who were living in Jefferson County in 1860 according to the U.S. Census.   Michael, age 30 and wife Catherine, age 20 were listed along with son James, age 1.   I am trying to find out if James is my ggrandfather.

Are there marriage records for Jefferson County?  I'm sure there isn't a birth record for James.  The family moved to Crawford Co., WI before the1870 census.  Any help would be appreciated!

Subject: John Viehauser family

I am seeking any information on my 2nd great-grandfather, John Viehauser, (29-October-1823) and his family.  I have a photocopy of  a State of Wisconsin, Jefferson County, Declaration of Intention (to become a U.S. citizen)  that was dated the 4th day of September, 1855 (? the year has each five written slightly different, but I think they are both fives).  According to the declaration, he came from Prussia.  I do not have copies of final citizenship papers, but the photocopied document I have was apparently requested in November of 1871, and was certified by P.N. Waterbury.  It does not state where it was requested from, although I know he ended up in Stearns County Minnesota around 1867.  I do not know how long he was in Jefferson County, but unverified sources (obituaries) state that my great grandfather, also John, was born there on October 17, 1857.  (Another source, however, has his birth, and that of his sister Theresia, as being born in Belleville, Illinois.  I do know that the elder John Viehauser served in the Civil War, and was mustered in at Belleville in 1862.) Unverified sources have his spouse as A. Mary Renner, born in 1823.  I do not know if they were married in the U.S. or Prussia.  Basically, I am trying to find the time of his arrival in the U.S. and any information that may exist about his marriage, births of children, land ownership, church affiliation(s), etc.

Any information you have that could help me in this quest would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to determine if a Charles F. Dewitz may have been born in Dodge County, WI.  As far as can be determined, he was born 1886/1887 or so.  All I know, though, is that the was born in Wisconsin.  By a process of elimination, I have focused in on his possible place of birth as Dodge County.  I notice that Frederick Frank and Henrietta (Rex?) Dewitz had children born in Dodge County, namely, George Arthur Dewitz, born 28 Nov. 1883 in Oak Grove (died 20 Nov. 1962, place unknown); Frank Martin Dewitz, born 27 April 1885 in Oak Grove, (died 21 July 1933, place unknown), and POSSIBLY Albert Dewitz, born 22 Oct. 1886, Juneau, Dodge County.  If you have any costs associated with the help I am seeking, please let me know and I will forward payment to you.

Johann Martin Georg Ewald Krueger and Maria Christiane Baehn Riemer Krueger with their two children arrived in Wisconsin with the congregation of David Star Evangelical Church in 1842.  Their daughter, Karoline Friderike Dorothea Krueger, born 1829 was my great-great grandmother.  When Johann and Maria died they were using the spelling Kreger (recorded in St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Milwaukee).  Johann was listed as George Kreger. Their son was Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Krueger, born 1832.  I have not been successful in locating him so far.  However, I have found in the 1880 census for Concord, Jefferson County, Wisconsin, a Fred and Augusta Kreger. Do you have information regarding Roswell Pickett?  He was my great great grandfather's brother.  I will be glad to pay for any information regarding him.  He had land in Jefferson County.  Also, Armine Pickett also had land there before he moved to Winabego Co.  Please let me know.  Blessings:  Carol Anderson

Subject: WETZEL, COON , KUHN, KIESSLING, KISLING, WI

I am interested in exchanging genealogy informarion with all who are related or researching Wetzel families who came from Prussia/Germany about 1860?and settled in Jefferson county Wisconsin.

I am descended from Fred H Wetzel b.1825, married to Wilhelmina in Prussia; children I know are Albert,Emma and Ida.Ida married Adolph Coon(Kuhn) and lived in Jefferson,Milford WI before moving to Barron WI after 1880. Their daughter Ella Helene married Henry Emil Kiessling(Kisling) in 1894 at Haugen WI. Their son Alfred Kisling is my grandfather.

I am most interested in the Wetzel's Prussian origins but will be happy to exchange any and all family info I have.

Thank you very kindly for assisting me on this matter.  I am trying to locate a former family member whose name is:  Gladys (Fehrman)  Mortinson  (Martinsen) or (Martinson.)   I believe she has a Son whose name is Elwood and he could possibly be in his middle or late fifties with his address in Jefferson, Wisconsin.   I appreciate your time and effort and would like very much to hear from you on this matter.

Regards, Mrs. Marilyn Merett
