Subject: Query Gormley

GORMLEY.  Seek info about FRANCIS GORMLEY and wife NANCY who moved from Ohio to Trenton township, Dodge Co., WI sometime between 1850 and 1860.  Francis was born in Ireland in the 1790s; Nancy was born in Penn. Perhaps between 1800-1810.  At least 8 children were in WI with them.  The family was farming in Trenton in census of 1860 and 1870 but gone in 1880.  Did Francis and Nancy die in Dodge Co.?  If so, I would like dates and places.  Also seeking obit for Nancy:  my main goal is to find her maiden name.  Thanks for your help.

Subject: QUERY RE JOSEPH HEGER, 1850s JEFFERSON RESIDENT

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am writing to seek biographical information about Mr. Joseph Heger (1835-?), the son of Conrad and Eva Heger, who was living in Jefferson County, Wisconsin during the fall of 1855 and perhaps thereafter. All three Hegers were born in Hesse, Germany and emigrated to the United States at an unknown time prior to 1855. Joseph was born in Hesse on 11 Jan. 1835, and on 9 Oct. 1855, with the written consent of his parents, left his civilian occupation as a lithographer to enlist as a private in the U.S. Army's Regiment of Mounted Riflemen (Co. "K"). He served the normal five-year term of enlistment -- all of it on the frontier in what is now Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming -- and was discharged at Fort Union, New Mexico Territory during the fall of 1860. Other than the fact that Joseph Heger was living in the Nashville, TN area during 1896-97, when he applied unsuccessfully for an army pension, I have no other information about him. I have made inquiries through the National Archives and the historical /genealogical community in Nashville/Davidson County, TN  without obtaining additional information about Joseph Heger. (By the way, Heger should not be confused for the Watertown, WI soldier of the same name who was born in 1837 and on 23 Oct. 1861 enlisted for Civil War service with Co. "K" of the 3d Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry.)

Ideally, I would like to be able to learn what became of Joseph Heger following his army discharge at Fort Union in the fall of 1860, including the place and date of his death. I would very much appreciate any light that you can shed on this minor mystery. My interest in Joseph Heger runs to my work as editor of a documentary history of the Utah War of 1857-58, a military campaign in which Heger and his regiment participated. By the way, during his army enlistment Heger produced a series of pencil sketches of the scenes that he encountered in the West that are among the most notable of that period.

Many thanks for your help.

Sincerely,

William P. MacKinnon

Independent Historian

Subject: D/JCGS research

Records for St Stephens Lutheran Church for some of my ancestors.

My original search was centered on Gottfried Heldt, who married Augusta Splinter (Brandt).

I have now discovered that Augusta Splinter immigrated with her stepfather, Gottfried Brandt, her mother Anna (or Augusta) Brandt, her brother Wilhelm Splinter, another brother Charlie Splinter, and other half brothers and sisters, one of whom was named Louisa Brandt.  If you have any record of these additional relations, I would appreciate the copy.

I also have a suspicion that some of the people named in the St. Stephens records who were baptismal sponsors were relatives.  I would appreciate any help in researching Anna, Christian, Theresa, Mathilde, and Marie Heldt.  Also, Gottfried Heldt had two children by Friederike Martin Heldt, Mina and Theodore.  I would love to find any mention of them.

One more question:  Friederike Heldt and Rosafina Heldt were buried (I think) at Auszehrung.... what or where is that?

Thank you so much for this information.  It is wonderful to get a chance to learn about my past... and I've met so many wonderful distant relations.

Amy

I do know that some of my ancestors settled in Watertown. And thanks to your fine records I was able to fill in a few blanks on the family tree.  My question is re: a Rev. Alwart supposedly from your area.  His name was mentioned in an old news ad. He apparently officiated a marriage on Feb. 23,1870, possibly near Crystal Lake?  At any rate if any of this rings a bell, I would be grateful for any insite

Subject: GIDEON LEAVITT

Dear Society:

I am interested in any information that you may have concerning my great great grandfather, Gideon Leavitt.  I believe he may be the same Gideon Leavitt mentioned in the "History of Hebron" article, in which he was a member of the committee of highways.

A daughter, Martha Maria, was born in Hebron, 31 Oct 1845, according to her husband's military pension records.  Another daughter, Mary, may have also been born there about 1849.

Could you search the 1850 census, and other pertinent records that you may have for this family?  I would like  photocopies of these records if possible.  I'll be glad to pay the membership fee and other associated costs for this information.

This family moved from the Western Reserve of Ohio after 1835 and ultimately settled in Goodhue County, Minnesota.  They are descended from the Mayflower.

Let me know what you find.

Thanks  /  Kevin Pioske  /  LeSueur, Minnesota

My Great-grandmother Jennie Jeanette Thorpe Connolly was supposed to have been born in Beaver Dam, Dodge County, Wisconsin, December 16, 1871. I have no positive proof on this.  I am wondering if anyone at the library will do a look-up for me. I would like to know if she had brothers and sisters, too. I am not even sure who her parents were. I am positive about her name and that she died in Vilas County, Wisconsin.

Thank-you,

Greetings - Here's a query for posting to your site.  I'd appreciate any insight into the Feehan or Hanlon families.

I'm researching Bridget FEEHAN b.1830 in Ireland. Her father Timothy FEEHAN was b.in Ireland, mother (unknown) also b.in Ireland. Bridget married John HANLON in Waupun. An undated newspaper article celebrates their 50th wedding anniversary, saying they were born in Ireland, and came to this country in the early 1850's, settling in Wisconsin. In 1866 they removed to Minneapolis, and three years later located on a farm in MN. They had five children, but I am aware of only 2 of their children: Timothy James HANLON b.1864 in WI, and Julia HANLON b.1867. Please email me kctuna@earthlink.net or snail mail Kathy Salmons, 1873 Riverview Dr, Charles City, IA 50616.

Thanks,  Kathy Salmons

I have the following document.....birth of my GG grandfather..

 Name: Albert Platz
Birth Date: 08 Apr 1874
County: Jefferson

Record: 000032

What I found is his parents names.....Karl Platz (born in Konigeburg, Germany) married to Justine Gross. Don't know when or where.

As Albert was indeed born in Jefferson County, they were here! I can't find anything on him nor his parents.   I am wondering if he had siblings...and possibly someone else has the name in their research, but not interested in him particularly.  Or ANY other information regarding the Karl Platz family.

Subject: Norris

Hi  --  How do I contact the people who are looking for Catherine Norris  I believe I know where she is buried.  My great uncle Eugene O'Neill is buried in Calvary Cemetery with his wife Hannah and various other children.  On the tombstone is a Catherine Norris who died at 71years of age.  I wonder if she is who they are looking for?  I think Catherine is Hannah's mother.

Larry O'Connor from Chicago asked for her in the May, 1999 newsletter, as well as some other researcher from the web queries. Hope this helps.

I am also looking for the death certificate for Ellen/Eleanor O'Neill who was married to Patrick O'Neill my great grandfather.  They lived in Waupun for 25 years - from 1875-1901.  Patrick had three children with Mary Troy (Kate, Annie and Daniel - who moved to South Dakota after his father's death in 1901), and when Mary Troy died in 1872, Patrick married Eleanor O'Neill 3 years later.  Their children are Mary and William - my grandfather.

I also haven't been able to find a marriage certificate for Patrick and Eleanor O'Neill.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Diane O'Neill  /  Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Interested in gathering more information of family surname:  WARTCHOW. My great grandfather Henry and his brother Charles, lived in Jefferson Co. form 1856/58 through 1882.  Their brother Robert lived Watertown from 1882 on. There could have also bee a brother John who came in 1881.  Our ancestor, Henry Wartchow, was married to Caroline VOLKMANN and after her death to Julia BRUN.  We have seen various different spelling of the surname so are interested in any that resemble it.

Hello!     I have been trying to locate information regarding a Heller family.  This family immigrated to this area in the early 1850 where Wilhelm (William) Ehrenfried F . Heller received naturalization on 25 March 1861 in Wisconsin, USA.  This family has several children born in Hustiford, Wisconsin.  Could you please help me find birth records for the children of William and Maria Elisabeth Daberkow Heller.  The children I am looking for are Anton Heller, Emiel W. Heller, and Frank Heller.  I know this family was of the Lutheran faith; but I have no idea what church they belonged to.

Any assistance in locating more information about this family is greatly appreciated.  Regards, Marcha

Dear Folks,  Could you please put me in contact with a local historian or genealogist

in the Watertown area?  My family came to Watertown in 1852 from

Germany.  Although they moved to LeSeuer Minnesota in 1860, they

somehow had to leave behind something or someone that I can find.

Surely there must have been relatives or an immigrant society that

made them pick Watertown as their new home in America. Any

information you may have or know someone who may know some-

Subject: Mulbergers

I see from your website that the Mulbergers played a prominent role in establishing Watertown.  My great-great-great grandmother was Mary Mulberger of Western Pennsylvania and in checking I have found that in the early 1800s there were just a handful of Mulbergers in America.  I am hypothesizing that most of them if not all were related. So I wonder if you have any further background on whether the Mulbergers in Watertown came through Western PA where they might have stayed (between 1800 and 1848) and then split into one group that settled in Watertown.  Thanks for your help.  Here's my website which shows Mary Mulberger under the Woodward section of my online tree.
