Hello from Germany, the father of Joseph J. Schmitt, 1909 - 1980, who lived in or near Watertown, was Peter Schmitt. I would like to know if you can tell me if this Peter Schmitt was born in Dasburg/Eifel/Rhine Province between 1865 and 1885 and emigrated to the US at the end of the 19th century. If yes, I can help his offspring with further information about their home and their ancestors as this Peter Schmitt I'm looking for was the brother of my greatgrandfather, Heinrich Schmitt. This Peter Schmitt also had two sister, named Barbara and Elisabeth who were about the same age as he and emigrated together with him. I own a photo showing two boys about 10 and their younger sister. This photo was taken in a Racine photo studio.

I am searching for my BRUESKE (BRUSKE) relatives who came from somewhere in Germany sometime before 1883.

There may be a death certificate for Mrs. Brueske from Ashapon, WI who died Sept/Oct/Nov 1886. I'm stumped as to where Ashapon is, but some historical records from Minnesota mentioned the above information. Therefore some Brueskes must have been living in Wisconsin at sometime.

I would be grateful for any help. I have been searching for my BRUESKE relatives for 15 years without success. Any suggestions would also be appreciated.

Thank you, Linda Larsen

Looking for the dates of death and location of burial of my 4x great grandparents. They were Hans (Henry) Heinrich Erdtman Ihde and Sophia Catharine Ihde nee Dahl. Henry was born 19 March 1792 in Sulte, Mecklenburg-Schwerin and died 1870-1880. Sophia was born 10 September 1789 in Sulstorf, Mecklenburg-Schwerin and died 1860-1870. Both are on the 1860 U.S. census of Dodge Co. as Henry and Sophia Eda are living with their son John Eda (Johann Jochim Heinrich Ihde)in Richwood, Shields Township. Henry is found on the 1870 U.S. census of Dodge Co. as Henry Eider still living with his son John in Danville, Shields Township. Johann Jochim Heinrich Ihde is buried in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Watertown, Dodge Co. with his second wife Dorothea nee Grutzmacher. He died 4 March 1895. There are two graves adjacent to his--one says Mutter the other Vater. I suspect these are the graves of Henry and Sophia, but the stones are too worn and covered with lichen to make out anything. Does D/JCGS have the records for the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery (in Watertown) and if not who can I contact who does? Thanks,

Ken Ihde

Re: John HAYES, immigrant from Ireland, worked at Neda Mines (HAYES mines, named after him). His grave is in the Old Catholic Cemetary in Mayville. He lost his entire family in Ireland (I believe 6? boys and his first wife) to the Bubonic Plague while he was here. His stone at the cemetary is an obelisk with, I think, his name on one side, and three? other wives on the other three respective sides. I can't read them because of weathering. MARY seems to be a name used twice? My question: what information can you give me re his wives actual names, including MAIDEN names; dob, dod. John had a son, WILLIAM, who I'd like to research after John. You see, William had Steve, Steve had Floyd, and Floyd had me. I've had Joel and Joel has had Zoe (Zoey), a girl. I've been meaning to do this for years, so here I am. Thank goodness for email! Thanks, Mike

I was wondering if you could tell be about anything about the church St. Joseph's that was in Richwood. Apparently it must have consolidated with another church because when I was at St. Henry's in Watertown they looked it up to try and find me an address or phone number to which I could contact them anout records, but they couldn't find a listing for the church. I am looking for info on the Klinger's who lived in that area and were apparently associated with thre different Catholic Churches in the area. St. Henry's in Watertown, St. Bernard's in Watertown, and St. Joseph's in Richwood. I have already gotten some info from St. Henry's and am trying to see what info the other two churches might be able to provide me with on this family. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi, I am looking for the birth records of my great-grandparents. The information that I have tells me they were both born, of German parents, near Watertown. My ggrandfather's name was Amil G. Fredrich Mohr born Sept 25,1865. His wife's name appears with a couple of different spellings: Ada/Ide/Edie Bendert/Bentert born 1863. I have conflicting information as to Amil's parents' names. Any help that you may offer would be greatly appreciated. (Amil had a brother named Louis F. Mohr born Aug 20, 1867, and a sister Helena born 1874.) I don't know when the family left the Watertown/Dodge County area but know that Amil was confirmed in a church in Iowa in 1879.

I am looking for info on the family of Reuben Mason Keen who lived in the Grafton area from the 1830's to 1868. Your 1840 census shows him as Reuben Kean of Aztalan. Reuben married Aner Edwards in 1837 and Veronica Alft in 1847. I know that at some time the area became part of Ozaukee County. Reuben and his family came from Lewis County, New York, but I am not sure when.

I would also like any info you have on the family of Reuben's wife Sarah Bates Keen, who married Reuben in 1817. I don't know if she lived long enough to move to Wisconsin, but her children did.

Do you have any info on the parents of Veronica Alft, who was Reuben's third wife? They were Michael Alft and Peta Anella ("Nellie") DeWald, both from Germany or Prussia. Veronica was born in 1825 in Bonn, Germany. Thank you.

As a new member of the society, I have SO many questions....

It turns out that two parts of my family go through Jefferson Co.

My wife's family does-- the STIEHM family. We know here grandfather was Reynolds Oliver (or Oliver Reynolds), his father was Otto and his father was Henry. Recently, I came across a book (Jefferson County, WI and its People by Ott -- 1917) In it, is a biography of EC STIEHM. The Biography lists one of his brothers as Henry E. Could this be my wife's Henry?

Secondly, my family goes through Jefferson County. My G G G grandfather and grandmother, Daniel NEHMER and Anna STELSE lived there. Daniel is buried in the Christburg Cemetery.

I missed the July meeting. But would appreciate any leads to pursue on these families.

Thanks,

Ken Researching NEHMER, SCHAUER, SAJDAK, SIDLIK, STIEHM, JOHNSON, BURTON

My great-great grandfather was Wolfgang BAUER (5/25/1840-5/14/1890) -- he was married 2-3 times, first to Margaret GLIER and then later to Katherine HEINZ. My family had thought he was the original Bauer to come to America, but a few years ago I found other info in the 1850 (?) census records, showing that he was part of a larger family and that his father's name was Wolfgang and his mother's name was Barbara. Unfortunately I have misplaced the additional information I had. That Wolfgang had some children born in Bavaria (including Wolfgang), 1 in Canada, and then others in Wisconsin. From the census records it looked as if they had perhaps gone originally gone to Canada (1 sibling was born there) in the mid 1840's (judging by the birthdates) and then later to Wisconsin.

I would be interested in any information you can provide. I am especially wanting to find out more about the link into Germany. Thanks, Richard J. Bauer, Jr.

Rowena was the daughter of Ambrose and Huldah (Frost) Powers, b. ca 1833 in Maine. Ambrose may have died in ME, ca 1843 or between 1843 and 1850 in Dodge Co; Huldah is shown as head of household in the 1850 Dodge Co census, Portland Twp.

Charles B. Stoddard was the son of Hely (Healey, Hela) and Betsey Elizabeth (Bates) Stoddard. They are supposed to have moved from NY to Dodge Co, WI in 1844 and relocated to Vernon County, WI in 1854. Charles had a brother Henry and a sister Almira. The Stoddard family all relocated to Vernon and Monroe counties, WI. They should show up on the 1850 census but I haven't found them yet.

Hoping to find cemetery records, wills, land records etc., showing my ancestors in Dodge county. I have found BLM records for Ambrose Powers' brothers Charles S. Powers in Dodge Co, and Moses B. Powers in Jefferson Co., but no sign of Ambrose or Huldah, or the Stoddards :-( Any help would be appreciated... also, anyone else researching these folks??? Thanx.

My great grandfather HERMAN J. MEDE emigrated to the U.S. from Lauenberg, Pommern about 1868 at the age of 13. He settled in Chicago about 1880, but his whereabouts prior to that time are unknown. However, naturalization records show a HERMAN MEDE receiving citizenship in Jefferson County (ctf# 2678) in 1895. Is anything known about the man of record or his family that would help me determine if he was my relative.

Looking for leads in finding marriage records or any data on a J. Giles SARGENT. He married Jane SMITH, of Oneida Co, NY by 1853. I think they married in Jefferson Co, but I never found record of their marriage. He does show up in the 1850 census in Hebron as James Sargent, Living near his father, James Sargent Sr. His name may have been Julius Giles Sargent. He used the name Giles Sargent. Giles was the s/o James & Fanny (Hale) Sargent of Hebron. The surname was sometimes spelled Sergent or Sergeant in the earlier days and spelled Sargent today. Jane Smith died in 1871 in Hebron and is buried there. He reportedly married (2)Mary SMITH, Jane's sister by 1873. The reason I think Gile's real name may be Julius I found record of a Julius Giles Sargent in Pierce Co Marriage records and he did indeed move to Pierce Co WI, after 1871 when he married Mary Smith. A Julius Giles Sargent and a Mary Whitney show up being married in December 25, 1873 Pierce Co marriage records. Did Giles marry Mary Smith in Jefferson Co or was she Mary (Smith )Whitney and they did marry in Pierce Co., WI? Any Whitney researcher's out there? There were a few buried at Hebron Cemetery? I think they knew eachother before setting out for northern WI. Mary Smith had a daughter named Ida, and family ,members say it was Ida Sargetn, but again, I found an Ida Whitney married to a Francis Moore in Pierce Co marriages. Can someone figure this out? I can't seem to. I say Mary Smith was married to a Whitney 1st, then Giles after her sister Jane died. Was She married to a Whitney in Jefferson Co and then her and Giles moved with his 4 children to Pierce Co and then marry? Giles was in the Civil War and was in the 42nd WI Infantry Regiment Co. G. He died 1906 and is buried at the WI Veteran's Cemetery at King, Waupaca Co, WI. Thank you for any replies.

NELSON/HOWARD NELSON, Wm. m. HOWARD, Clarissa in NY. The family moved to Watertown c. 1837. His widowed mother, Judith NELSON may have moved with them & died there. They probably had at least 11 children, (I don't have all their names). The family moved to MN 1860-1865. Clarissa may have had a brother, John & a sister, Helen; who were listed at seperate times living with the Nelsons. I'm stuck on the Howards.

I am researching the history of the Edward Gray family in dodge county, WI. Edward Gray married Lyda E. ???. Lyda died of blood poisoning in Beaver Dam in 1892 at 33 years of age per the Fox Lake Library. Edward and Lyda had 3 children in Beaver Dam, Franklin (Frank) Lamont, Harry Dalton, and Robby. Frank was born on 10/28/1883 and is the eldest. Four years after Lyda died (1892) Edward married Carrie Wienbrenner(?) in Beaver Dam on 07/04/1896 per the Beaver Dam Argus Paper dated 07/09/1896 on page 3.

Also of interest is the Wacter/Watcher family of Durand, WI. Franklin L. Gray son of Edward married Grace Elenor Watcher aka Teresa Wacter(Born 08/22/1884 in Durand, WI) in West Hope N.D. in Dec 1906. Her brother Michael Wacter and a man named Black appeared in a newspaper in 1939 as being charged with murder in Pepin County. The article said Black was released and Wacter was being pursued in the charges, but we could not find out anything about the outcome. Was he aressted, charged, tried, convicted ???

So the Names of interest and anything associated with them (i.e. birth/death records, land records, news accounts, marriages, children, etc.) are :

Edward Gray (father) Lyda E. Gray (mother) Franklin (Frank) Lamont Gray (son) Harry Dalton Gray (son) Robby Gray (son) Grace Elenor Gray aka Teresa Wacter (wife of Frank) Michale Wacter (sister of Frank's wife).

Thank You for any and all efforts in this matter. All information will greatly assist in my research. I am sure the family will be interested in obtaining copies of the information you find. Again, thank you.

Best Regards,

Larry A. Durbin larryad@whyweb.com

Hello, I am trying to find a bit of information on the GARDNER family, who was located at Aztalan from the mid 1800's to early 1900's. Names I would recognize would be Asa C. Gardner (1843-1930), Flora H. Gardner (1846-1910), Mary H. Gardner (1871-1932)--all 3 are buried at the Aztalan cemetary. Another Gardner buried at Aztalan cemetary is Joel Gardner, though I am not familiar with him beyond 2 40 acre land grants in the 1840's. Asa served in the Civil War, Wis 3rd battery. Another name would be Raymond Gardner, who passed away in 1995 but had family ties to relatives at Aztalan. The family house had been located next to the church/current Aztalan museum. Any info on the family would be much appreciated. I'll be visiting the Aztalan museum in a few weeks, but as a previous inquiry to the museum was not responded to, I don't have much hope that I'll find additional info there. Thanks in advance for your help. Brian Gardner, St. Paul MN
