John M. Yorgey

John M. Yorgey (b. Feb 1, 1862 in Juneau, Wisconsin d. Oct. 15, 1938 in Horicon, Wisconsin buried in Oak Hill Cemetery).  On Nov. 5, 1884 married Maria Rogers (b. April 2, 1860 in Kekoskee, WI d. 1953 in Green Bay, WI).  They had 4 children, 2 sons John D. Yorgey and Rogers Yorgey, and two daughters, Blanche Yorgey m. Arthur Wickman and Roxie Yorgey m. Arnold Wickman.  John M. Yorgey was Pioneer Horicon Resident and Veteran Express Agent. 

 

Holding the position of Express Agent for almost fifty years, Mr. Yorgey’s record in that work began on June 1, 1883; when he became agent for the American Express Co., continuing until March 1, 1894, when the Agency became the United States Express Co. and his duties continued under that agency name until May 1, 1909.  From May 1, 1909 to July 1, 1918 the Agency was known as the Wells Fargo & Co.  From July 1, 1918 to Jan. 1, 1921, he was agent for the American Railroad Express Co. and from Jan. 1, 1921 to Sept. 15, 1930 for the R.R. Express Agency, retiring from active service in 1930 and his son Rogers D. Yorgey, taking over the Agency.

John M. Yorgey Cabinet maker, Horicon; born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, in 1830; spent his early life and was educated and  learned his trade in his native State; worked about three years in Philadelphia; came to Horicon in 1857, and began  working at his trade; began business for himself the same fall, continuing about one year; was then for some time in the employ of the HELLIWELL Brothers in the wheat business; owned a meat market in Horicon a few months, and spent the summer of 1860 at Pike's Peak; returning, he settled on a farm near Juneau, and, after three years, settled in his present home in Horicon; worked several years in the Horicon Sash and Blind Factory, and has been in the employ of  VAN BRUNT & BARBER about seven years.  Married Miss Catherine DAVIDSHEISER in 1852; nine children: David, Anna, Emma, Kate, Estella, John, George, Frank and Sarah. Mr. YORGEY is a Republican, and a member of the M. E. [Methodist Episcopal] Church.
