St. Peter’s
Evangelical Church of Helenville

Celebrated 100 years in its present
church building with a short service and the placing of a new time capsule into
the cornerstone of the church.
St. Peter’s congregation is one of
the oldest congregations in Wisconsin.
Starting with only a handful of members, the church began to grow
quickly. The very first church building
was planned in October of 1848 and was constructed of logs just north of the
present building. In 1857 the property,
which encompasses the current cemetery and church was purchased from George
Haag, one of the original members of St. Peter’s. In April of 1858 the congregation voted to
construct a new building and work began on the present church site in June of
1861. In 1898 the congregation marked
its first 50 years and the Golden Jubilee was celebrated in October of that
year. At that time an anniversary
collection was taken and funds were designated to start a building fund for a
new church.
In late September of 1901 the
decision was reached to build a new building.
Plans were submitted by a Jefferson contractor at the congregational
meeting of January of 1902. The contract
of $4,480 was accepted in February of that year and the former church was moved
south of the new church with the present building built on the same site as the
former.
