Genealogy seminar gives tips on doing research

By Margaret Krueger, Watertown Daily Times, 09 22 2003

A wealth of information was imparted to aspiring and experienced genealogists on Saturday at a seminar sponsored by the Dodge/Jefferson Counties Genealogical Society Inc.

About 85 people from southeastern Wisconsin attended the daylong seminar held at the Elks Lodge.

Jim Hansen, genealogical reference librarian at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison, spoke on frontier genealogy and tips on special sources and techniques for tracing pioneer ancestors.

The morning speaker also presented a session on tracing immigrant ancestors through naturalization records and passenger lists.

Two sessions on using the Internet were given in the afternoon by David Bradford of Menomonee Falls, who has been a genealogist for over 20 years. He gave information on how to use the Internet to limit or expand research while seeking specific information.

He also gave suggestions for computer hardware, software, back-ups, data storage, message boards and strategies for finding relatives while protecting private information.

Hansen provided written information on where to look in print or microfilm at the historical society or other information centers, and Bradford gave handouts on computer terms and definitions and a list of the best Internet sites to find information.

Since 1974, Hansen has been the genealogical reference librarian at the Wisconsin Historical Society where he assists several thousand researchers a year with genealogical and historical research. He taught genealogy courses and was an instructor at the National Institute on Genealogical Research at the National Archives from 1971 to 1990. He is a nationally known speaker, noted for his informative and entertaining presentation. He has lectured in 37 states at national seminars.

Bradford is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received a bachelor of arts degree in physician assistant, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, receiving a master's degree in business administration. He is a retired president and chief executive officer of a Milwaukee medical care system and now owns a marina on Beaver Dam Lake.

Persons wishing to join the Dodge/Jefferson Counties Genealogical Society can mail a check for $12 to P.O. Box 91, Watertown 53094-0091. Members can use the society's extensive library resources and receive an informative newsletter four times a year.
