Schools of Aztalan

The village school is well sustained and is doing well. But in most of the other districts of the town the number who attend is so small that the people pay out their money reluctantly for teachers’ services.

When visited during the summer term, the pupils in four of the schools numbered severally as follows: seven, eight, thirteen, fourteen; and as might well be expected – judging from these figures – in four visits to each school in town, I have met but one district officer, and no other parent. They remain at home, leaving the teachers to “jog on” as best they may, with their little charges, uncaring and uncared for.

This is remarkable, for no town in the county has been more liberal in outlays for school houses than Aztalan. They are all brick and generally well constructed, convenient and in good repair.

One or two of the schools have been doing better this season than formerly, and it is hoped the gain will not be lost next winter by the employment of incompetent teachers.
