v  Bill Habeck, 2007 presentation to Dodge/Jefferson Counties Genealogical Soc

My Great Grandparents first came to America in 1868 and settled in Herman Township Iron Ridge, WI.  By 1870 they were farming in Danville Township Blue Earth County, MN.  I grew up in Waldorf, Waseca County, MN.  These are a few of the resources I have used researching my Pommern origins.  In late March early April 2007 our son and I traveled to Germany and Poland to retrace where our ancestors came from in Pommern, Kreis Naugard.  -  Bill Habeck, August 2007

05 02 08  Google Street View:  One element of our society is keeping an eye on options offered by new and evolving technologies.  I’d like to share with you something I recently came across and while one can question its application and raise possible privacy issues it is also exciting and offers many possibilities.

I had been monitoring Google’s several-year evaluation of “street view” images of a few major U.S. cities.  Street view allows one to navigate a city at street level and the ability of pivot horizontally (360 degrees) and vertically (approximately 130 degrees) and zoom in and out while virtually driving down streets and taking in the view.  Milwaukee, one of 30 such cities, had been “google-ized” and when checked out it proved to offer what had been reported.

Even more recently I heard that Madison had undergone the same treatment.  When checking this out it was readily noted that not only Wisconsin’s capitol city but portions of practically all cities and towns of Dane, Dodge and Jefferson counties are now google-ized.

About a third of Watertown is now viewable at street level.  When I checked the differing views of the former church building housing our genealogy library I saw that they were captured on a day when my car was parked in front of the 504 S. Fourth Street entrance.  A little investigation of scenery and known changes (e.g., the aftermath of a known fire) allowed for the conclusion that the imagery of Watertown was captured last fall.

So if one knows an address one can use Google Maps “drive up to it” on your computer monitor and take a clear and contemporary ground-level look around the neighborhood.  As long as Google has driven its little car down a street and taken pictures of the neighborhood, the images will be available as a feature in Google Maps.

One might learn something . . . while having a lot of fun.  [Caveat:  This streaming of images hardly works with a telephone connection to the internet; one needs broadband or cable]   /  Ken Riedl, webmaster

Query 0419200802    Subject:   Gruber research

I am researching my gr grandparents, Mathius Andreas Gruber and his wife Barbara Frank.   They arrived in the US ,  May of 1854 on the ship the Agnes from Bavaria, Germany.    The family story is that a brother came on the same ship, but they lost contact.    There was another family on the ship,  Frantz and Barbara Gruber with children Joseph and George.   Both Grubers stated they were going to Buffalo but my gr grandparents went to Port Colborne area, in Ont. Can. and the other Gruber's I have traced to Beaver Dam , Wis. but have not been able to make contact.    I have nothing else to go on, other than I know my gr grandfather came from a little village in Bavaria, called Kuhnenritt.   I have no parents names for him.   Wondered if there is anyone there researching Gruber.

Query 0401200801   Subject:  Query on John Bhend

Our farmhouse, an 1917 American Foursquare in rural Watertown, has the name John Bhend written on many pieces of wood throughout the house. I read that it was common practice to label loads of wood with the builder's name. I'd like to know if John Bhend built our house, and also a bit about him: dates, location, family, occupation, etc.

Query 0330200801   Subject:  The RUTZEN family

Query 0326200801  Subject:  A letter Found    /   Mabel Grace Bartlett/Celius/Debock

To whom this may concern  -   Just yesterday my sister-in-law brought to me a copy of a letter written to my grandmother, Mabel Grace Bartlett/Celius/Debock. The writer identifies herself as Aunt Gusta. It is post marked on the envelope Oconomowoc, WIS. Dated Oct 26 5 - PM 1922.  Aunt Gusta, I believe was Augusta Ruth Bliss (nee) whom I have been lead to believe married W. W. Flack She was the daughter of Zenas and Almeda (Ingraham) Bliss. Augusta was born 04 Feb. 1852. Our family record has Zenas birth as 16 April 1810 at Springwater, New York and death as 15 Sept 1872 in Ashippun, Dodge, WI. He married Almeda Ingraham on 27 Oct 1833 in Savoy, Mass. She was born in 1812 Mass. and died 16 Jan. 1876 Ashippun, Dodge, WI.

With all of this in mind, I wondered if your group would be interested in the words of her letter. I will include it and you have the right to print it if you'd like.

Oconomowoc, Wis - Oct 26th 1922              Dear Mabel –   Your letter of the 21st is just received, telling me of your loss - and I am indeed very sorry to hear it - You have my deepest sympathy - and I know so well what it means to have to give up a dear little boy - That was my lot - many years ago - but will never forget the trial it was when I used to go to that little grave I could hardly bear it – and it seemed to me I must take the little grave right up in my arms – We must try to be brave at such times - and think it is for the best – any way, they are safe - and never have the trials of this life to under go - at the time of the late awful war - I thought so many times, had my boy have lived he would probably have been in the strife too - as most all others were - and that too would have been a trial - I some times think when we are made to give up our loved ones - that it means a sort of reining process for the ones that are left - and we have more feeling for the rest of the folks around about us - God knows best - and so with best love to you - and heartfelt sympathy to both yourself and Oscar -                 I am as ever                Your Aunt                         Gusta

Mabel and Oscar Celius lost their boy, Gordon Francis Celius, on 13 Oct. 1922 in Sunnyside, Yakima, Washington. He had been born 28 Aug. 1917 in Winona, Winona, Minnesota. Mabel and Oscar had separated that spring and she had moved out west to live near her folks,  Noble Clark Bartlett and Hattie Charlotte Prescott.  It was Noble's mother, Julia Amelia Bliss, who was the sister to "Gusta" Augusta, whom I believe wrote the letter.   Gusta's letter was so touching in her efforts to reach out and try to console another mother who too lost a child early in life. Seeing that it never was thrown away impressed me that every person who has read it could not. I would love to hear from any one who might have a connection to this family.

Query 0306200801   Subject: Kasten, Buss, Voelker

Edward Kasten (1839-1900) and Augusta Buss (1838-1920) were my great-great-grandparents. Both immigrated from Prussia during the 1850s and eventually settled in or near Watertown. Edward is the son of Friedrich Kasten (1813-1877) and Augusta Jaeger (1813-1884).   Augusta Buss was first married to Friedrich Voelker, son of Michael Voelker. Friedrich Voelker died of wounds suffered during the last days of the Civil War in 1865. Augusta married Edward Kasten later that year.   I'm looking for descendents of any of these lines -- Kasten, Buss or Voelker -- or for anyone who might have information on these families.
